Mousedeer at Peirce
20 Aug 2008
Ben Lee
Pls see the attached photo of a mousedeer taken last year on 20 August 08 during my conducted vertebrate night walk. Its a long story to tell you how difficult I got this photo of the elusive mouse deer.
Although its a small group of about 8 persons led by me, I spotted the deer in total darkness except when its eye reflected back my small torch shine. All those who saw tot that it was a broken vase that shine from afar but to me, its a living vertebrate as it changes it angle and move a little. I almost give up thinking that it was a vase too but due to my diligence and discipline observation that it dawn on me of what I saw was indeed a living creature in the dark. I soon instructed everyone to froze and instructed my team members to aim the torch on the subject direction indicated by me and I gave them a 1-2-3 signal to shine. Once the light was shone on the subject direction, I began shooting like crazy with my camera in same direction but not really able to see the animal and was hoping to catch some of it on the large pixel pictures. Out of so many shots, I was lucky to be able to find one which I cropped alot from a large 10 megapixel photo. The deer picture was cropped out of the 10 megapixel size photo and it constitute only 1/10 of the photo. The rest of 9/10 nothing but jungle backdrop. Its very difficult to take photo at night and at a long distance. As you can see from the photo, the deer's eye is in total white reflection as it was reflected from the many torch that shine on it which means the deer is still an area of complete darkness.
The day time shot is easy and not so exciting as the night shot. Due to the night shot of the deer, it is difficult to confirm if its a GMD or LMD.

Jeremy Lee
Took a handphone shot of it as it swam past. Came back home and did a google image search and only then did I find out about this Pig Nose Turtle or Fly River Turtle native to PNG I think. Shot to fame in the pet trade I guess...this turtle. Now available at a local reservoir near you.
